Homemade Laundry Detergent

September 22, 2015 by Ashley

Is homemade laundry detergent worth all that, DIY Pinterest hype from the past couple years?

home made laundry soapYes, friends, yes!  It really does cost pennies on the dollar, lasts for months, works for high efficiency machines, and washes just as well as store bought varieties.  Making your own laundry soap also removes the chance of those big label mystery ingredients sneaking into your pants…dun duuun duuuuuun!  Also because, it just feels damn good to DIY the crap out of something (that you can’t screw up too bad) okay.

We’ve experimented with several recipes out there over the past couple years, (never ending pile of laundry, sigh*), and this concoction is our favorite.

Recipe type: DIY Cleaning Product
Prep time:  15 mins
Total time:  15 mins
Serves: 12 pounds

Homemade laundry soap that will keep your clothes fresh and your wallet full!
Ingredients
  • 4 pound box Borax
  • 3 pounds of baking soda
  • 4 pound box washing soda
  • 4 bars kirks castile soap
  • 20 drops of Essential oil such as Tea Tree, Lemon, or Lavender (optional)
Instructions
  1. Grate soap by hand with cheese grater or with food processor.
  2. Combine all ingredients in extra large bowl or bin. You may want to fashion a bandana mask for the mixing, as it can get a bit dusty.
  3. A strong whisk works well for stirring everything up.
  4. Place in storage containers for use. *Hint if you save your dishwasher soap bins, this recipe fits perfectly inside two of them.
  5. Use 1-2 Tablespoons of mixture per laundry load and place directly inside drum.
